Pre-Filter Pockets

Pre‑filters play a key role in air handling systems. They trap coarse particles—dust, fibres, lint—before these reach finer filters. This helps to prolong filter life, cut down on maintenance, and maintain steady airflow, particularly in demanding commercial and industrial environments.

This type of pocket filter captures large airborne debris, reducing particle load on subsequent filters. It offers a high dust-holding capacity through multiple pockets inside a rigid frame, allowing for high airflow volumes without frequent clogging.

Pre-filters remove large particles; fine filters remove smaller pollutants like smoke, fine dust, pollen or microorganisms. Pre-filters protect finer media from clogging too quickly and help maintain consistent system performance across filter stages.

HEPA filters are engineered to capture extremely small particles (e.g. ≥ 99.97% at 0.3 microns). Pre-filters are not substitutes for HEPA—they serve as protective layers to reduce debris load, allowing HEPA media to work efficiently for longer.

They are found in air handling units, spray booths, HVAC systems in manufacturing, commercial buildings, data centres, and in facilities needing controlled air quality. Wherever there is a significant dust, fibre or particulate load, early-stage filtration helps maintain the performance of the entire filtration system.

Pre-filter pockets are typically made from synthetic non‑woven fibres, which offer high dust-holding capacity and low resistance to airflow. The media is often self-supporting, eliminating the need for internal spacers or reinforcements. The pockets are usually housed in a galvanised steel or rigid plastic frame to ensure strength and stability during use, even in high-moisture or chemically exposed environments common in industrial applications.

Pre-filter pockets trap larger particles at the first stage of filtration. Each filter features multiple pockets that provide an extended surface area, helping to maintain airflow and reduce pressure drop across the system.

Usually not. Reusing pre-filters tends to degrade the structure and lessen filtration effectiveness. It is standard practice to replace rather than clean once the dust‑holding capacity is reached, to ensure air quality and system reliability.
